Hanging out at the Pal Corral

It’s sleepover Friday night at the Crandal barn tonight! Pam is helping me get things set up for pals from all over the world who will come visit, tell stories and have fun in my virtual riding lesson room. Sleepover starts at 6 pm eastern time, USA today. It goes for four hours. Anna and Lulu are riding Acorn and Snow White over right now. They’ll stable their ponies here during our sleepover and ride back home tomorrow.

Earlier today, Wilhelmina Wiggins drove by with Picasso again, this time with great news. She is pleased to invite members onto her estate where they now can travel on some brand new trails, all the way to her family's historic mansion.

Any member who has bought a pony from Olson's and has paid their board bill can ride on the existing trail from Three Birches to the Wiggins Estate meadow clearing. Then, when they click on two white gates in Ms. Wiggins' fence, they will enter a whole new space.

Members can choose a "Forest Adventure" trail. Hint -- have a camera from Kline's. There is a reward if a member can manage to snap a photo of whoever is setting illegal animal traps along the trail. When a rider reaches the Wiggins Mansion, there is a drop off box where a photo or quest item can be left. There is a 10 WB reward for each trapper photo a member turns in. The new trails have lots of new jumps. Members can travel along these trails at the gallop.

And there's a special item hidden along the Forest Adventure trail. Hint: look for a gleaming sparkle. If you click on it, into your inventory it goes. Soon, that item is going to unlock a lot of new adventures and mysteries to solve.

What other items in Wiggins do members want to be able to photograph with their cameras? Send your w mails and tell us!

Now that we have over 60 quests, many members have asked what they should do when they reach a quest that has a drop off point along the Wiggins Estate trail -- and they have not bought an Olson's pony with a board bill to pay.

The good news is that Mr. Olson has lots of ponies for sale. When a member buys a pony, they agree to pay 300 WB (about $1.25 USD) a month for its keep. Then, members not only get a free personal cabin to decorate but they also gain entry to new and exciting places like the Wiggins Estate.

Even more good news is that it is easy to earn enough bucks to pay a pony's board.

Thanks for helping Wiggins be a very special place on the web, where everyone can ride the pony they always wanted.

clicker club

Letter from EagleGirl: Introducing the Clicker Club!

You've probably all noticed that there are cool new clubs forming every week. This week one of those clubs is a Clicker Training Club! If you have never heard of clicker training, you are in for a treat. Clicker training makes use of a small plastic tool called a clicker. Ask your parents and grandparents; they may remember a toy called a "cricket". It was a clicker without the plastic box around it. I had one when I was a girl. It was lots of fun, though I usually had to play with it outside. It makes a really fun sound that will drive your parents crazy if you do it inside the house too long. But the main benefit of the clicker is that the "click" is used to tell an animal exactly when he has done what he is supposed to do. When he hears it, he knows that he did the right thing. The click is followed by a small treat. I say small because if you give really big treats you will eventually have a happy, well trained, FAT animal!

For those of you who are history buffs, or just curious, ask your grandparents about how clickers were used by paratroopers in World War II!

Clicker training came into its own in the 1960's. It was used to train dolphins. It's really hard to pat a dolphin and say "good boy", and it's even harder to tie one up so it can't swim away! So a whistle was used to let the dolphin know what the trainer wanted. Every time a dolphin did something the trainer wanted, the trainer blew the whistle, then tossed it a fish. Yum! Let's do that again! If you've ever had the opportunity to go to Sea World or some such place, you have seen the amazing things those animals can do. Even though the trainers used a whistle at first and not a clicker, the principle is the same. When the desired behavior is exhibited, make the sound, then offer a treat. A lady named Karen Pryor used a clicker to train dolphins. She is still working today, only she works mostly with dogs and cats. She has written quite a few books, and has made videos.

Clicker training is all the rage in dog training circles, and most of the large pet stores sell clickers for just a couple of dollars or less. So, if you have a horse, dog, cat, or other animal you have been thinking about training, you might consider joining our Clicker Training Club.
We hope to see you there!
