May Not Be Lucky
By: Kalsey
Age: 10

Taylor walked to her horse’s stall.
“Hey Taylor. You need to go and get Lucky,” Abby, Taylor’s horse trainer said.
“Okay,” she answered. Taylor went to grab the light blue lead rope off of the hook. She went out to the second pasture and attached the lead to the tie-dyed halter. She walked over to the tack room and grabbed her saddle and saddle pad with her bridle and martingale. When she brought it over to Lucky’s stall she hung her saddle with her saddle pad over the stall door and she hung her bridle on the hook outside of the stall.
“There you go Lucky,” she said to Lucky. Taylor led Lucky out to the ring and walked him to the mounting block. She put the reins over his head and pulled the stirrups down on both sides.
“Six from the top, right?” Taylor asked Abby.
“I believe,” she replied.

“Pick up your canter,” Abby said to Taylor. Lucky picked up the canter and on the right lead. When she started jumping she jumped the cross rails. Then she went to the verticals. She did all of those jumps perfect. When Taylor and Lucky got to the sweeper something went wrong. Taylor cantered up to the jump and when Lucky took off she landed the wrong way. Her hoof landed on the ground then twisted. Lucky fell to the ground.
“Oh No!!!” Abby cried. It all went by in a flash and the last thing Taylor knew she was crawling away from Lucky lying on the ground.
“Taylor, are you okay?” Abby asked.
“I’m fine but what about Lucky,” Taylor replied.
“Sarah call the vet NOW quickly,” Abby called to Sarah, the stable hand.

When the vet came, she checked Lucky out.
“I’m afraid he has a fractured cannonbone,” the vet said.
“What does that mean?” Taylor asked, getting nervous.
“It means that you have a decision to make,” she answered. “ You either put him to sleep or keep him alive and suffering.”
“No… I can’t do this… All I want is the best for him… but I also want the best for me.”
“But you’re not the one who has the fractured cannonbone,” the vet said.
“I know but I’m scared. I never wanted to have to go through this. All because of one stupid jump. Never should of done it.”
“It wasn’t your fault, you didn’t know this would happen and neither did I,” Abby said to Taylor.

One hour later, the vet had everything ready and Taylor was sobbing as hard as she could ever.

Then with one tiny needle, Lucky was gone like the wind.

“No… Lucky I love you so much!!! Buddy, I already miss you!!!” Taylor said out loud.

I’m the ocean, the water, the forces of nature, the mountains, the sky. I am now free, free to go where I want. Lucky ran faster than the speed of light.
