Watching Over

A gentle breeze rippled his mane. He stamped his hoof, making an imprint on the soft turf beneath his powerful frame. A slight sound caught his attention and his ears twitched backwards. Below where he stood, seven mares, four fillies, and two colts grazed and frolicked. Someday, those colts would challenge their mighty father. In the mean time, he would protect them with his life. The sound came again. Then, a lean, gray figure shot out from the nearby trees. It headed straight towards the oblivious dark bay filly. In a flash, the stallion gave an angry warning to his herd and raced towards the intruder.
At the sight of the full-grown stallion charging down on it, the wolf turned on its heels and raced away. The filly whickered to its mother, who came trotting up and sniffed her foal all over to ensure that it had not been harmed. In a few years, that same filly would protect her own foal with the help of a herd stallion. Now sure that his herd was safe again, he returned to his lookout.
