Age:17I wake up on Monday morning. The hot July sun is coming through my window already. I look out my window at the street and all is quiet. I look at my clock and it reads 5:45 am. I walk downstairs in our new house and things are still silent. I go into the bathroom and splash water on my face. I look at myself in the mirror and then turn the light out. I grab the eggs out of the fridge and mix 2 with milk for scrambled eggs. I pop some wheat bread into the toaster and begin frying my eggs. I jump at the sound of the toaster. "Nice one" my older brother Jason says smiling from the doorway. "Shut up. I forgot about it,” I say laughing. He goes into the bathroom and I take my plate to the table. I begin eating and then my little brother comes downstairs too. "Hey Jo" he says sitting down across from me. "Hey Boo. Coming' to the barn this morning?" I ask taking a bite of toast. "Yep. Dad said that 356 is going to have her calf today." Travis says smiling. "Cool. We'll definitely be there for that,” I say returning his smile. Jason walks out and Travis goes into the bathroom. Jason makes himself a bowl of cereal and goes into the living room. 'Boys! Don't they know how to sit at the table.' I shake my head and then put my plate into the dishwasher.
I go upstairs and my cat Licorice meows from my room. "Well then get out before I close the door"! I say letting her out. She trots down the stairs and goes to get something to eat. 'Sheesh. Temperamental' I pull on a pair of cut off jeans, a tank top, and a sleeveless shirt. I put my long brown hair back into a messy bun and grab my phone. I press the side button and the screen lights up revealing that I have a message. I open the text from my best friend Lilli and it reads Can't wait 2 hear abt nw hrs!!! I smile and quickly type back I knw. Me 2!!!! I slip my phone into my pocket and go back downstairs to find my brother Jason getting ready to leave. "Travis and I are coming" I say slipping on a pair of long socks. I put on my rubber boots and tell Travis "Hurry up Boo." He comes out of the bathroom and runs upstairs. I grab my duffel bag and throw 4 bottles of Gatorade, 4 snack bars, and 4 apples into it. "I'm heading out to the truck" Jason says. "Boo hurry up!!" I call going out right behind Jason. We climb in and Jason turns the truck on. I slide into the middle and Travis climbs in. 'Nothing worse than being squished at 6:30 in the morning' I smile and rest my head on the window behind me.
We get to the farm and Jason goes into Dad's office.
"We are going to feed calves” I say as Travis and I walk toward the calf barn. We enter and bellows explode from the little bovines.
"We are coming!" I exclaim going into the feed house. I mix the milk replacer with warm water while Travis puts fresh bedding in the pens.
"Ready?" I call from inside. "Yep" Travis says opening the door. We feed the calves and then go to the big barn. I see my Dad outside the pregnant cow pen.
"We're gonna miss it"!!! I exclaim running toward the open door. Travis races next to me and we skid into the barn.
"SSHHHHH" my Dad scolds and we go off to the side.
We watch silently as the Momma cow moos to her calf. "Olivia go get the skid-steer and take it to the barn. Feed it." My Dad orders smiling.
"Yep". I say running off. I drive the machine to the barn and Travis puts the calf in the bucket. I take boy and calf to the calf barn. We feed the newborn calf and pet it for a while.
The day goes by and I am so tired. I walk into my Dad's office and he smiles "Ready to meet the other horse?" I immediately perk up and say "yes of course!!" "They will be here in 5 minutes" he says getting up. "Sweet"!! I exclaim pulling my phone out of my pocket. I look at the time and it reads 3:45 'Lili is out of summer school.' I text her quickly New horse arrives 5 mins. I just put my phone back and Dad looks out the window "She's here". I run outside as the trailer pulls up in front of the barn. "Hey Brad", Mr. Samoy says getting out of the drivers side. 'Hey that's the farms feed nutritionist! I didn't know he had horses"I smile to him and he says "Hello Liv." "Hello, Mr. Samoy. Thank you for bringing your horse out here." He looks at my Dad then at me. "Ah. A surprise I am guessing. She was my daughter’s horse. I told Kali my daughter if she wasn't going to work with Sky anymore then I am selling her. So I'm selling her." I nod as we walk back to the back of the trailer. I hear an excited whinny from within. My heart pounds as Mr. Samoy open the door. He goes in and walks out with a beautiful horse. I stare in aw at the little compact mare. She is blood bay, has 3 white socks, a star, a snip, and big brown eyes.
"This is Sky". Mr. Samoy says.
"Sky" I breathe silently to myself. I touch her neck and she turns her head to look at me. "Hello gorgeous" I say blowing into her nostril. She nickers and I laugh. "Ready to ride"? My Dad asks smiling.
"Sure." I say. Mr. Samoy hands me the lead and I walk her around until he emerges with western tack.
He tacks her up for me and I watch for any vices. I cannot find any. She stands quietly as he cinches her up, then puts her head down, and opens her mouth obediently for the bit to be taken in. 'Wow. What a horse' I say to myself. Mr. Samoy steps away and I smile.
"Ready kiddo"? he asks.
"Yes sir" I say.
I mount with the long stirrups and then he adjusts them to my legs. I ask Sky to walk and she heads off down the driveway. My heart beats and I can't help but smile as I direct her up to the free stall barn. The cows moo at me as I ask her to trot past and go into the big pasture. We get into the big pasture and I ask her for a lope. She does so and we lope to the end of the pasture. I laugh and then turn her back toward the gate. We are going along at her steady lope and then I feel myself slipping. The saddle is turning. I kick my feet out just in time and I fall to the ground with a thud.
