Lulu and Wild Fire and the spooky sound
by Dale Evans & Trigger age 12
It was a Monday morning when Lulu mounted her welsh pony, Wild Fire, and rode toward the gate that led to the trail in woods. When they were on the trail, Lulu kicked Wild Fire into a trot. When they had been trotting for a little while Wild Fire suddenly stopped cold and pricked his ears. He looked to the left and snorted as if to say "I think there's someone in the bushes and it's scarring me".
Lulu looked to the left and listened. Suddenly there was a spooky whinnying sound. Lulu could feel Wild Fire shivering. THERE IT WAS AGAIN! The spooky sound! Lulu kicked Wild Fire into a galloped and ran back to his pasture. When they got there she dismounted and ran toward the house. Then she stopped and walked back to the pasture.
Wild Fire looked at her as if to ask "I thought you were scared. Why did you come back?" Lulu told him that they were going to go back and find out what was making that spooky sound. Wild Fire whinnied softly as if to say "ok, I'm a little scared, but I'll go with you".
When they were on the trail again, they walked to the place that they last heard the sound then Lulu stopped Wild Fire and listened carefully. THERE IT WAS AGAIN! Lulu dismounted and looked in the bushes to Wild Fire's left. She looked for at least five minutes then as she was looking behind a big green bush she saw a little brown bush rustle. Lulu stopped what she was doing and walked over to the little bush and looked behind it. There was the littlest foal she had ever seen. He was black and white and he had his left leg stuck in the little bush's roots. Lulu bent to get the little foal free. After what seemed like a hour she finally got it free. Lulu at once saw that the foal was a welsh pony and that his leg was broken. The little welsh foal needed help. Lulu whistled for Wild Fire. He came presently.
Lulu pick up the little foal and laid him across her saddle then she walked along side Wild Fire keeping the foal balanced so he didn't fall off. When they got home, Lulu took the foal to her dad and he took them to the Vet. When the Vet, Dr. Ripley, was done bandaging the foal's leg he told Lulu that the foal needed to rest and have warm mash three times a day. On the way home Lulu's dad asked if Lulu would like to take care of the foal while he was recovering and Lulu said " yes".
