___________________________ No New Leaf Fires,
Precipitation, 'Pony Pals' Patrol
Cited After several prank leaf fires in the past month, Wiggins Volunteer Fire Department Chief Roger Edwards this week publicly thanked the residents of Wiggins for their support and efforts.
"Residents flooded Police Officer Hunter's office with tips, and
three young girls took it upon themselves to keep up a horseback neighborhood
watch," Chief Edwards said. "With the rain we've had in the last
few days, we think the danger from these fires is past." |
New Contest
Announced for Fall Fest Pet Costume Contest The latest addition to next weekend's Fall Festival lineup is a costume contest -- for dogs and cats. "The Festival is such a big event," Fred Jones of the St. Francis Animal Shelter said. "We hope that people will enter their pet in costume as part of the fundraising for our programs." Pet owners can dress their pet in any costume they desire. The entry fee is five dollars per animal. Prizes will be awarded in numerous costume categories, including Best Dog, Best Cat, Funniest, Cutest and Best Homemade. All funds raised will go to support the St. Francis Animal Shelter animal rescue programs. |

LEARN TO SPEAK
HORSE YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q. Whenever I walk into my pony's
pasture she puts her head up and trots away. What is she saying?
Ponies love to play games. This has to be
one of the favorites. She's saying "Chase me, I'm too fast to
catch!" When ponies are out in pasture together they will play this game
over and over. With two ponies, the game begins by one nipping the
other, then running away. When you enter the pasture with a halter, your pony
thinks you are 'it' and starts to trot off to see if you'll play.
The rest of this game is just like tag. Your pony puts her head up
showing you how fast she is. Trotting away from you, preventing you from
putting a halter on her is kind of like going "Na-na- na-na-nahhh! You can't catch me!" |
When you chase
after her, you are playing her game and she will always win. To stop her from
running, change the rules. First, don't chase your pony with
a halter, ever. If you want to catch her, walk into the pasture with the
pony's halter and lead rope over your arm, eating an apple. Ignore your pony. She will trot off at first, but will
stop when she sees you are not following her. Stand still in the middle of the pasture and eat your
apple, looking down at the ground and just watching your horse out of the
corner of your eye. Your pony will rapidly get tired of trotting
around you and will come over to investigate your apple. Give it to her and
put the halter on her while she eats it. If do this the same way each time, your pony
will quickly learn the fastest way to get your apple is to come right over to
you without trotting off first.
