Has Wiggins Firebug
Quit? Arsonist vs. the
'Pony Pals' Patrol There were no new blazes in Wiggins this week. Wiggins Volunteer Fire Department Chief Roger Edwards thinks he knows the reason why. "It started after last week's fire at Olive Sanders' Beauty Salon," Chief Edwards said. "Mrs. Sanders' granddaughter and two other friends came up with a good idea." "We put together a Pony Pal Patrol Plan and stuck to it," Anna Harley reported. "When one of us had to study or do chores, the other two were riding." The young girls kept an eye on all of downtown Wiggins. They used trails as shortcuts between various parts of town. "We rode every street in town over and over," said Pam Crandal. "We talked to people to remind them to keep an eye out for whoever was setting the fires." For the past month someone has set fire to four leaf piles in Wiggins. Clues were left behind at two of the blazes but the Police Department had little to report. "We are still looking at this series of fires," Officer Hunter said. "In the past week two minors were questioned and released to their parents." Lulu Sanders put out the latest leaf fire on October 6th. "I wasn't gone for more than a few minutes. When it happened so fast, I knew that it was someone who just saw my pile and took advantage," Lulu said. "The Pony Pals plan to keep patrolling Wiggins every day until the leaves are all down." |

LEARN TO SPEAK
HORSE YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q. My pony likes to snort out her
nose and spray me with drops of dirty STUFF. It's really annoying when she
does this all over my clean clothes. Why does she do this? Is she sick? The good news is that your horse is happy
to see you and is saying "Hiya! Welcome into my space!" Most horses only do this when you
first approach them and it almost always means they are happy to see you.
So snorts are a cheery greeting between horses. If you were a horse, you could snort
back and then nuzzle the other horse to show your friendship. As a human, the
best response is to pet or gently scratch your horse to show you are happy to
see them too. If you want your clean
clothes to stay clean, groom your horse wearing an over-shirt or clothes that
can get spattered, then change just before you mount up. You can tell the difference between this kind of
snort and a cough by looking at the horse's mouth. During a cough the horse's
mouth will open and it will sound more hollow. A snort sounds fluttery –
like making a "raspberry" sound with your lips. _______________________________ Fall Festival Saturday,
