Chapter 1
All alone

Dear Emma,
I arrived in Brazil today. It is so beautiful!
The plane ride was quite pleasant, and I thought about
you the whole way here. I am so sorry I had to leave
you in Paris, all alone except for Mrs. and Mr. Murry.
I know, they are quite terrible to live with. I wish I could
See your face every day, and sometimes I regret leaving. But sometime, you can come here to me or the next place I go. With my job and all, you never know where I will go next. I am so sorry.
But here, I can only write letters, and in the dark of our hut
at that! Three times a  week we can go to the public library to use the email,
Because the computers here are only for work, not email.
I must turn of the light now. The boss says so. Every time I write, I think of you on Fendie. I am glad that you at least have him! J

Love,

Your “Annoying” Older sister,
Beatrice

I could not believe it. She was in Brazil now. Studying for “WORK” as she called it around me. I am sure thought that really, she had the time of her life when she was away from me. She left me here with nothing. Nothing at all.  Only Fendie, a little bit of money and some instructions to give to Mrs. And Mr. Murry.  I had read over those notes she had given to me to give them, and I would never hand them over. I know that they will find out someday, but I am just so sad. Every time she goes somewhere she says I will come to her soon, but never do. I have never gone with her since day one, and this is the worst time she left me! With these horrid people, who had a good relationship with Beatrice, but never, ever me.  Sometimes I had to wait almost a month for Fendie to come with me! Then, Bea would leave us!

I must go start dinner, I guess. I finished my school, and sometimes I wait in my room before I go down stairs. My friends never come see me, but sometimes they will wait outside the picket fence around this old, yucky house, waiting for me. I am making spaghetti today, and then I will go over to Grace’s house for a sleepover.

Chapter 2
When does “Soon” mean?

Subject:  Miss you!

Hey Sis! I miss you a lot, but I am having a lot of fun studying the plants, animals and insects here! Guess what! You and Fendie can come here next soon! I figured out that you did not give that list to the Murry’s, but I cannot blame you. I am checking out a couple of books from here to read. Our bus is leaving soon, and I have to email a couple of other people now.

P.s.
I have so much more to tell you!

Well, it certainly sounds like you are having fun! Humph.  I miss u too, and I am not having much fun with the Murry’s. (SHOKING) Grace and her family offered to have move in with them, of course, I accepted, and I need u to know so that the Murry’s don’t get too worried. (Not that they would. They would probably be relieved!) Plz don’t tell them! Just tell them that Fendie and I are fine. When does SOON mean?
Emma

Had what I sent her sound mean? After all, I really did miss her. I checked my email and the mailbox every day to see if she sent me anything. Well, I don’t know. I need to go take care of Fendie.

IN THE BARN:
I was in the barn mucking out Fendie’s stall and I started talking to my Appaloosa Stallion. “Fendie, you don’t think that I was too rude in that email to Bea, do you?  I mean, I really DO miss her. Every day I go out and see if she mailed me anything or I check me email, even though I know that she only emails on Mondays, Thursdays, And Sundays at the Library.  After all, she did tell me that nobody could come except the employees. I could not imagine being in Brazil without her! That would be awful!” I looked at him when and he starred at me and he comforted me and nickered. I started again almost whispering, “we are going to run away to Grace’s house today. They have a barn that is nicer than this old thing and a room for me, Bea knows, and I just have to wait and see what she says and it will be all settled.” I finish grooming him, shined his tack and put it in the little buggy with my few things: my bag of clothes, and my memory box. I planned on having him pull me in it. I thankfully had oiled every day after I used it, and now the wheels did not squeak. I set all of his grooming things, my pillow, my clothes, and things like that in it. “I need to go check my email, Fendie. Hopefully Bea replied and is not very mad at me!

Hi. I am sorry you could not come with me, Em, but I asked and they said NO. I am so sorry, and PLZ don’t be mad at me. I guess I never really noticed it was that bad in between the Murry’s and you. I will tell them that I found somewhere else for you to go, and you will not have to sneak away. How does that sound? Going to Grace’s house would be just fine, and they have a barn you said right? Soon means on the 28th of next month. I am being transferred to a place called Wiggins. It is in Connecticut, USA. Hard to believe, right? Back to the USA!!! They said either I could stay here for 2 more yrs.
With only seeing you 2 times a year when I went back, or going to Wiggins, I said Wiggins, I mean, I barely know how to speak to these Brazilian scientists, right? I know how to speak English, like you! J I will be back there to get my things, and I will be able to see you show Fendie! YAY!!!  I have a rented car here for the week and I have a day of, Wednesday! Now I can spend all day here at the Library to email land chat w/ you! HAHA!

Oh! She is on here now! I can chat! I thought to myself.

CHAT

Emma: Hey! Did you get my email?
Beatrice Holly: No, Not yet.
Emma: Here is what I said: O THANKS GOD! You are not mad at me!
Ok great! I am still going there tonight, k? J
Beatrice Holly:J! I sent that thing to the Murry’s. Have Mr. Murry Check him email.
Beatrice Holly: Got to go! Meeting Bye!
Emma: K, Bye!

I still need to get ready! I got ready to go that night and told Mr. Murry to check his email, and I know he was suspicious because when I went out side to do the finishing touches (Mr. Murry thought I was feeding Fendie) he sat down on the computer and checked his email. I quickly ran tarweeds the barn and started packing all of Fendie’s food in my buggy. Earlier that day, Grace and her dad had come pick up the bedding, Hay and straw for our stay. I told Mr. Murry that they were dropping it off and he went to work. Mrs. Murry has been in bed all day, because she is sick, but I still had to finish all of my school.
I was all ready. I had Fendie’s Harness on, and I was luck that Mrs. Murry is sick in bed, because I think that Mr. Murry likes me. He came out to the barn and asked me a bunch of questions. I twisted some of the answers a little, but I was good. I mad sure to bring my School books and my laptop, my phone, and my cell phone. I attached Fendie to the little cart and I was ready to go.

Chapter 4
Grace’s House

Mr. Murry asked me to stay, practically begged me, I have NO clue why, but I said no. He said he did not blame me and I better go along to my new home. He swore under his breath and I thought I heard something about an orphanage, but I could not be curtain. I flicked the reins and Fendie started going. Then Mr.Murry ran up to me and asked me to take a lantern. I agreed, but I would blow it out after we started moving again. When he went to go get it, I flicked the reins and Fendie started walking. I flicked them a gain and whispered trot on and he started trotting. Thankfully the pavement was run down and Fendie’s hooves were quiet.  My cell phone buzzed and started playing the PSYCH theme song I quickly picked it up, and turned of the call. I looked to see who it was, and it had been Bea. I turned of my ring tone for all of my messages and texted her back.

Here is what I said:
TO: BEATRICE
FROM: EMMA
txt me ltr
She replied:
TO:EM
FROM:BEA
k

I quickly put my phone down and  turned Fendie down the lane that lead to Grace’s House. I skillfully lead Fendie to there barn and the lights were on. Fendie nickered “SHHH” I told him. He quickly stopped, but the other horses didn’t. A chorus of neighs went down the whole barn than Fendie whinnied. “SHHHHH!!!” I said sternly and even before I said shh, all of the horses were silent only a small foal made a small nicker to me. I continued into the barn, were, as planned Grace and her dad were. We went to the entrance of the house and unloaded the bags. Then, Mr. Mackenzie (Grace’s Dad) put my bags in my new room. Then, grace and I went to the barn. Here we unloaded all of Fendie’s things in the tack room and outside his stall. He had a roomy box stall, which had nice, deep hay. It had hay net, a water tub and some oats in the corner bucket. Once he was all settled in, we went inside; I showered and got ready for bed. Then, Grace and I had Macaroni and Cheese for Dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Mackenzie went out to eat and INSISTED on a baby sitter. Then I remembered, Bea had NO clue why I told her not to call. I quickly told grace, and she went up stairs to get ready for bed. I texted Bea and said,

TO: BEATRICE
FROM: EMMA
BEA, IM GONNA CALL.

Then I called her. RING, RING I heard in my ear.
“Hello? Emma, are you okay?” I could hear worry in her voice.
“I’m fine Bea, relax!!!” I said.
“Okay. Are you??” “I am at Grace’s house.”
“Oh. Okay.”
“Oh come on Bea, It was AWFUL living there, besides, Fendie barely had any space!” I argued.
“Fendie, Fendie, Fendie is that ALL you care about?? Don’t you care about me? You are so shellfish!” “Bea….?” Klink.
She had hung up on me. I went up stairs and checked my email. A few minutes later, Grace came in my room and asked if everything was alright. I told her and she said, “Maybe she woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.” Plane, strait faced. We both started CRACKING UP. Good old Grace. Always puts the joke in. then I remembered it. At the same time, Grace’s smile turned upside down. I said, “Let me go first.”
“Okay” she said. “Well, here goes. I am going to Connecticut, USA.”
“O MY GOSH!! She said! That is great! I am going to Rhode Island!”
“Really? were? I am going to Wiggins.”
“Oh. I not sure were we are going.”
“Well, a state away is better than across the world!” I said. “True.” She took a pause,
“When are you going?”
“Um, Bea said next month. I have a flight on the 28th.”
“Oh. OK. I am going next year. My dad is being transferred there.”
“Oh. Are you leaving all of your horses? All but Maggie, Bess, and Beth.”
“Ohhhh, That must be really hard. Harder than for me. I mean, I have been traveling to different countries for almost my whole life, and you, well you have to leave a whole stable of horses that you might never, ever see them again, and I only have to wait a month or so for Fendie.”
“Yeah, it is really hard” she said, “I am gonna go to bed, K?” “Okay. Remember. Yo’ll be fine.” I said poking her. Later I heard her crying, soon enough, she cried her self asleep.

Chapter 5
America, Again.

Today was the day. Mr. and Mrs. Mackenzie and Grace drove me and Fendie to the airport. Grace and I were crying, with her parents trying to get us to stop, all of my stuff that I own in the trailer. It was a sad, but happy day. It would be a 2 day trip there, with 3 stops to switch drivers. I had a room, and Fendie had a stall. Fendie had an over night trip that was only one day w/ no stops. They had 15 people on the plane, plus about 10 horses, and some other animals. Before we knew it, we were at the airport and saying our last goodbyes before I got on the plane. All of a sudden, Mr. Mackenzie told Grace to tell me.
“Tell me what?!” I asked, “Well,” Grace started,
“I am flying to America with you, and we are going to live together until dad find us a house!” she said, crying, but now for happiness.
“Does my sister know this?” I asked, not believing,
“Yes, she does, we worked it out with her about a month ago.” Answered Mrs. Mackenzie.
“Oh, my GOSH!!!” I said, I won’t have to sit next to a stranger after all…!” “And we both are sharing a room, what we always were hoping to do!”
“Yeah, Ha-ha!” After that, the time flied. I was not having fun, but dreading it, mostly. I was crying, half for happiness, half for sadness.  Soon, before we knew it, we were on the plane, waving to Mrs. And Mr. Mackenzie. I texted Bea:

I was so happy… I mean, what could be better? Grace was coming with me to stay in America were I would be until, well, I guess I would be there for a long time.  And what is better? I Even Fendie was coming, and so was grace’s horse, buttercup! We talk a really, really long time, and then both of us slowly drifted asleep.
I woke up suddenly… I heard a buzzing noise, I looked around me, wondering were I was, and then I remembered. I was on a plane to... AMERICA!!! And, even better, Grace, Fendie and buttercup a; came! I was so happy! Then, a little ping, the kind that always sounded when I missed a text. I looked up, the little phone was green, and it was dark outside. I turned my phone back on then looked at the text:

To: Emma
From: Beatrice
Hay, U? were are you? you know? Is it dark yet?
I smiled to my self…
To:Bea
From: Emma

To: Emma
From: Bea
LOL… I just sent it! J I am getting ready for bed. It is 8:00 here. See what time it is, k?

Then, the flight attendant passed bye and gave me a look that told me to stop, I squeaked, “Yes ma’am?” She smiled nicely, and I wondered what was going on “Oh, sorry, that man over there was being rude, and I was a little irritated. But, it is time for you two to get ready for bed and go into your cabin.” “Oh, Ok” I murmured.
“Should I wake her up?” I asked, motioning to Grace “yes, please, she said, I will tell you if anything goes on. Have you eaten anything? You two have been sleeping a mighty long time.”
“no, we have not.” I said, noticing how hungry I was,
“Okay, I can go see what we have, she said, smiling. I nodded, than poked grace in the ribs.
“OW!” she said pretty loud,
“Oh sorry” I said smiling a huge grin. Yes, we were like sisters.

Chapter 7

Home again. After our three day trip from Paris to Wiggins, we met up with my sister. She was renting a car and a trailer to pick us up. She had picked Fendie and Buttercup up the day before, and I think that grace and I could not wait to go see them. I ran up to Beatrice, or, as I called her, Bea, and hugged her. Even thought it had been 4 months since we had seen her, I still recognized her calm face, with a couple of freckles,  her very white smile, and her skinny body, with a tinge of orange, and her deep set blue eyes. All of her features rolled out in front of me. I ran toward her a soon as I spotted her, practically dragging Grace behind me. I ran up, hugged her, and smiled, then, I started crying. Tears of joy, we called them later, and I said,
“Bea, if you love me half as much as I love you, you must like me a lot!” I said, and she just smiled, hugged me, then Grace, tears running down her cheeks.

When we were on the way  to the apartment that Bea, Grace, and I were leasing from one of Bea’s old friends,  I remembered… My birthday was in two days. I smiled to myself. I would be with the people I love the most, and the HORSE I loved the most on my birthday. Grace asked me, “What are you smiling about?”
“Oh, my birthday is in two days, and I get to spend it with my best friends, and family!” I answered, smiling at her, “Who is the Family besides Beatrice.” She asked,
“Oh, you and Buttercup and Fendie.” “ahhh, I see. I am family now!” laughed Grace,
“Yup, you are!” I smiled at her and said… “Air Hugs!” I cried loudly then we did our famous air hug. Well, it is famous to us!

Once we got to the apartment, I heard barking… “What is that, Bea?” I asked, “Oh, that  beeping?” “No, the Barking.”  “What is wrong, Bea and Em?” Grace asked as she made her way up to us.
“What is that barking?” she asked after a moment.”OK, I might as well tell you. Come on inside.” Said Bea. We walked inside, and Bea flicked on the light. “WHAT THE HECK!” I screamed happily there, right in front of me read:

“HAPPY BIRHDAY, EMMA!”

It said in big bold letters on a huge white tarp that ran across a beam.  I smiled to myself. Then, Bea said
“I guess I could not keep it from you, cause you would find it, or the gift.” She said, “What is the gift!?” asked Grace excitedly, I just stood there practically frozen. There right in front of me, Bea was coming into the room, holding, a box looking thing, that looked like a dog crate had been wrapped, and I  smiled, she put it in front of me, and I hugged her. She smiled, but said, “go  on, open it!” she did not have to ask twice.
I tore open the side, I took one big tear, and I herd a little whine, a DOG whine! I pulled of the rest of the rapping paper, and there, was a small-sized dog crate, I opened the door to the crate, and out came a little Chihuahua! He had a Brown body all except a little diamond on his chest,

“He is SO cute!” I said! “What’s his name?”  “Well, he is from a breeder, like you prefer, and she does not name her puppies, so it is up to you to name him.” She replied, smiling,
“Oh! Bea! Thanks so much!!!” I said smiling broadly. I could not imagine… A dog of my own!!!! He jumped on me, I think we both had love at first sight! I smiled then said,
“OK. Lets go see ourselves some horses!” Oh yeah! How could I forget!” Grace said. Let’s go fins them now!”  looked over at Bea, and said, “Are they here yet? Do the need to be boarded somewhere?”
“No, there here. Out back. I’ll pull the car in. you can unload them, OK? He would not come out for me, little brat!” I laughed, along with her and said,
“Oh, How could you think he was a brat? He is just an angel with unloading and loading!” (He is really, horrible!) I walked over to the 3 stall trailer, and pulled down the ramp. Three whinnies came from inside, there where 3 horses! “Uh… Bea? Why are there 3 horses in here?”
“Huh? I’ll tell you later, just take a look at it, K?”She said. I replied innocently, “Fine.”
I unloaded Buttercup, a Palomino mare, with a snip and four white stockings, first. She had a mind of her own, but was definitely easier then Fendie would be. I tied her up on the side of the trailer, where Grace crooned her, and groomed her. Then, I moved to the door looking into the second trailer. I was careful to open it, then grab a handful of grain. I went to the ‘tack room’ in the back to get a bucket.
I asked Bea if she had any molasses, and mixed it together. I went into the trailer, Untied Fendie, then led him out, being lured by the grain and molasses, giving some to him, as well. I brought the mixture to the trailer end, left it there, and un-did all of Fendie’s trailer gear. He never, ever let anybody else do it.  I maid sure I had the double safety not, and I went over to the trailer door for stall 3, and let the horse sniff my hand. I pet her, from what I could see, it looked like a medicine hat. Her build told me that she was most likely a filly, about 1.

I walked into the trailer, let her sniff me, and then continued my work. I gave her some molasses mix, and led her out. She was fairly good for the age I had guessed of her. I led her, too over too the line, and put her in between Fendi and Buttercup. I pat her lightly on her neck, then continued to work on her traveling gear. To me, she looked like she had Thouroghbred, Arab and quarter horse blood in her. Most likely mustang, too. I gave her and Fendi a good grooming, then lead Fendi to the paddock, there were too, so I put Buttercup alone, and put Fendie and the mare together, since Fendie was a boy, most likely thought of the Stallion of the heard to Buttercup, I thought it would be better that way.

I made sure that the paddock gates were closed tightly behind me, then went to check out the shelters that were in the paddocks. The first one that was in Buttercups paddock had some lose boards that needed to be nailed up, had a water trough and a bucket. I removed the bucket, incase it was from the last people, and cleaned the water trough. I made sure that the floor was OK, and put fresh straw in it, for more comfort. Grace came of and helped me with the perorations for the night. She said,
“The paddock gates are sturdy, and there are no missing poles. I think that this is a nice little place!” “No barn, though.” I commented.
“and it is not even ours… we are renting it until we find a house in Wiggins. It is supposedly the city…  but not much of a big city to me.”
We went over to the other paddock, and continued the inspection, then we made sure that Fendi and the mares were comfy for the night.
