Chapter One: A New Life

One spring afternoon I was standing outside of Grace Of An Angel’s stall watching Grace give birth to a foal.   It was so amazing, I mean, just thinking that in a couple of minutes there would be a new life!!

As my dad came over to the stall door, I asked, “It’s a beautiful foal, is it a colt or filly?” I watched the foal try to get up for the first time, but its legs were so weak that it fell right back down.

“It’s a colt, that’s a good thing too, because my boss said that they have too many female racers,” My dad answered me while also watching the foal who was still trying to stand.” And I have decided that you are old enough to name the foal.” My dad said while smiling at me.

All of a sudden my body actually started to spontaneously make me jump up and down, “You mean it, I can name him!!!” I said while still jumping up and down.

“But naming a race horse is a big responsibility, Kaitlin. You’ll have until Tuesday to name him.” And then my dad started off toward the barn door.

I looked into Grace’s stall to watch the foal take his first steps and see his characteristics so that I could get an idea of what to name him.

The foal was a beautiful chestnut with four white socks and a huge white blaze down his face, but when he gets older the blaze will get smaller.

While I was watching, there was a beautiful moment. The foal looked into my eyes and I looked into his, it was like magic!!!

First, the foal planted his back feet on the ground filled with shavings, and stuck his bottom in the air!! Then he also stood on his front left leg, with his other front leg still tucked under his stomach. Then with one powerful gasp of breath, he stood on all fours for the first time on his life!!!

“Yea, good job…..” I thought for a minute, “Bullet Proof?”

I stood there thinking for a minute, and then said, “No, that’s not the right name for you, you’re too sweet.”

I looked over and I saw that the colt’s mother was licking him. An idea popped into my head, “Maybe….Water Proof!!!”

The colt looked at me and neighed as if he was saying, “Water Proof? I don’t like the sound of that name!!!”

“Yes, I guess you’re right. Water Proof doesn’t sound that good, I’ll have to think about it.” After that I said good-bye to the colt and Grace, and went to my house for a snack.

Chapter Two: Good and Bad Ideas

I walked over to the kitchen table with a pencil in one hand and a piece of paper in the other. I looked over to the bar and I saw that my mom was fixing me oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, my favorite!

“So your father told me that you are going to get to name the new foal,” my mom said while taking the cookies out of the oven to let them cool off.

“Yes, but I can’t think of any names,” I said.

“Well, maybe you could name him after his father, Sharp Dressed Man?” My mom said while pulling out the chair that was next to me.

“Hey, that’s not a bad idea, mom!” I said while copying what my mom had just suggested onto the paper.

Me and mom thought for a minute and then I suggested, “Exterminator?” Me and my looked at each other, then I wrote it down on the piece of paper.

“War Admiral?” My mom suggested, and then got up from the table to get the cookies so that she could serve them to me.

“That’s a good idea mom!” I said while writing down, War Admiral on the piece of notebook paper.

My mom walked over to the table with the plate of cookies in her hands. Then she grabbed a napkin from the napkin holder in the middle of the twenty year old furnished wooden table.

“Thanks mom,” I said, while my mom set the napkin with two cookies on it in front of me.

Later that day I went outside to watch the new race horse colt in the field, he was so energetic, but he was by his mom’s side the whole time. Still, I wondered what to name him.

Chapter three: The Excellent Idea

I watched the colt the whole rest of the afternoon. He was so fast, just like a race horse should be, he was a perfect candidate!

The colt stood beside his mom the whole time, never left her side. Maybe…….Super Glue? I thought while writing down that idea.

I looked up because I saw a fast movement out of the corner of my eye. The colt and his mom leaped into a fast gallop, I had never seen a colt go so fast, it seemed like he was going, maybe, 15, 20 miles per hour!

A couple of ideas popped into my head and I wrote them down, Kiss the Dust, Red Bullet, See You in the Winners Circle, Three Strikes Before the Wire, Horse of a different Color, All-American………Rocket!!!!

I jumped up and shouted, “All-American Rocket! That’s the one, All-American Rocket!!!!” When I shouted All-American Rocket, the colt looked at me and neighed as if to say, “That’s right, All-American Rocket! I love that name, I didn’t like Water Proof, but I love All-American Rocket.”

So I jumped over the pasture fence and ran to the colt and his mom, and then gave All-American Rocket a great big hug!

As I hugged All-American Rocket even tighter, I said, “I love you…..All-American Rocket!” Then as if by magic, the colt that I had just given a name to put his head on my shoulder and softly neighed as if saying, “I love you, too, Kaitlin.”

                                          The End

P.s There is going to be a lot more stories about All-American Rocket!!! The next story is going to about him getting trained, and about all the problems along the way.
