Mini Miracle

Age 12

“Crash” it was 1:00 A.M. I jumped up from sleeping to the loud noise. I slowly climbed out of bed. I tip toed to the window …..our fence was broken.

quietly I walked down the stairs in my pink robe and slippers. I opened the door and saw a shadow move behind the shed…..was it a ghost. I was afraid to look ,but I did. Could it be….no, that’s not right,……I must be dreaming. What my eyes saw before me was a shock……it was a miniature horse… and she was injured. Her right front leg was wrapped in barbed wire all cut up……but it was also wrapped around her left front leg. Every time she moved the barbed wire dug deeper in her leg. It was a horrid sight. She was bleeding a lot. She was skinny and had dirt  knotted in her hair. She was breathing heavily and was in a lot of pain. She was passing out because of all the blood loss. I slowly picked her up and carried her into the house. I started the fire in the fire place and got blankets and put the blankets on the floor next to the fire. I gently laid her skinny, injured body on the blankets. By now she was asleep. I got out a bucket of water, cloths, bandaging tape, and bolt cutters and brought them to her. With a lot of patience and time, by 3:00A.M. I had the barbed wire off her delicate body. The cuts were deep the blankets and her body were covered in blood. I slowly and gently cleaned her cuts with the water and wrapped them with the cloths and sealed them with the bandage tape. I took another cloth and washed all the blood and dirt out of her hair. I softly brushed all the knots out of her hair. By 5:00 A.M. she was all cleaned up and both her legs were bandaged. I covered her with a blanket to keep warm. I laid on the couch next to her. I woke up and 8:00 A.M. to the mini nudging my face. everyone was still asleep. She could not get up. I filled her a bottle of water and nursed her.   I heard footsteps coming down the stairs. My mom came down “what is this!!!” she yelled. “last night I woke up to a crash and this mini was behind the shed all cut up in barbed wire” I answered “ so I took her in, cleaned her cuts, and bandaged them.

“we must take her to the vet” she said worriedly. So we got dressed and We picked her up and laid her in the back of the car with blankets and drove away. When we arrived at the vet we quickly carried her in the office.

“what do we have here?” He asked.

“ I found her all wrapped up and cut cup in barbed wire, so I cleaned her up and bandaged her legs” I explained.

“this is urgent, so lay her on the table.” I softly laid her on the table.

The doctor began unwrapping the bandages.

“ she needs stitches” he said.
Then he but her on anesthesia and started operating. 2 hours later he came out of the room.

“ you did a great job taking care of her cuts “ he complimented me.

“ oh thank you” I replied.

“how is she” I asked worriedly.

“ she needs LOTS of rest and rehabilitation” he answered “ she looks as if she hadn’t eaten in 3 weeks and she was abused.”

“It’s so sad.” I answered sadly “ am I supposed to find the owner because if he or she was treating her like this I think we shouldn’t”

“That’s correct, you don’t have to find her owner” the vet said.

“ I am going to train her and heal her wounds” I said courageously.

“ that’s a very kind and amazing thing to do.” My mother and the vet said  together.

We talked a little more then we carried her to the car and took her home. I put her by the fire again and my dad stayed home to watch her while me and my mom went to the horse supply store. We bought hay, grain, horse medication, a horse blanket, buckets, halter and lead rope, and straw for bedding. We drove home and the mini was still sleeping. We had an empty shed so we went in cleaned it out and put the straw in. we made it comfy so we hung the food and the water buckets up. When it was finished we made sure the lights worked and made a fence so she could have a paddock. When we finished I carried her into her shed and laid her in the straw. I sat with her watching her sleep and thinking “how often does this happen to people”. At 4:00 P.M. she woke up. I kissed her tiny, soft nose and she whinnied. She stretched her head to push the bucket. I guessed that she was hungry and thirsty so I gave her a tiny flake of hay and water.( they can’t eat a lot to fast when they are skin and bone!) she laid down again so I can stroke her soft neck. And then I thought of a name for her……..”Miracle.” so I made a name plate and put it on the Shed door. It was dark out but I decided to sleep in the barn with her. I laid down next to Miracle and slowly fell asleep.

The next morning I woke up to a tiny Neigh and a nudge on my cheek………No, this is amazing!......Miracle was standing and walking around! I was so happy! I fed her hay and water kissed her and went outside. I filled the bucket on her paddock fence with water. Then I said “Miracle” and she walked out of the barn and came up to me. “ you are doing great girl!” I said to her. I slipped her halter on and walked her around. Then I took her to my drive way( where there was cement) and took off her bandages to clean her legs. I started the water hose and gave her a big soapy bath. After she was shining clean. I wrapped her legs back up and walked Miracle to the barn. She walked out to the paddock and stood there with the wind blowing threw her long flaxen mane. Her reddish/dark chestnut coat shined. She was enjoying the wind. Every day the progress became better and better, then a few months after, I walked outside to see Veronica galloping along the fence. I took her to my drive way and undid her bandaged to see that her cuts were healed.

Then I stood back and looked at Miracle. She looked like a totally different Mini horse. She was not skinny anymore, her mane and tail were long and smooth, and her reddish chestnut coat shimmered in the sunlight. She was Beautiful. She had healed. So that night I took her for a walk. When we were walking I passed an autistic Girl and Her family and I thought wouldn’t it be wonderful if I could take Miracle to Share her braveness of recovering with the kids with special needs. So that Night I got to work. I called a children’s hospital and made an appointment for next week to take Miracle. The next day’s flew by and soon enough it was the day for Miracle to go in. I braded her hair in pink ribbons and took her to the children’s hospital. When we got there all the kids were rushing to Miracle. They all loved her ,each one of them and I knew that at this point the forgot their problems and smiled a smile that they hadn’t in a really long time! I was crying. I knew Miracle Gave them the Courage and Bravery for recovery. Everyone cheered when Miracle neighed. Then it was time to go. That night the Children’s hospital called to thank me for making those kids smile again. Now Miracle goes to Children’s Hospitals and Schools all over the united states and makes those kids smile and let them forget the problems in their lives. Today, she is still eight years old and she keeps helping children. This is the story of Miracle, the AMAZING Miniature horse!
