The Land of the Unicorns-Just Trust Me
By lululauren2000

Age: 10

I yawned and opened my eyes. Morning. I looked at the ball on my dresser.  The key to The Land of the Unicorns was right beside it. I sighed and got out of bed. I looked out my window. The sun was shining down on our little house. I pulled on shorts and a t-shirt. I picked up the key and the ball. No. I wanted to eat breakfast first. I walked downstairs. Mom was making pancakes, eggs, and sausage. “Good Morning Sandra.” said Mom.
“Morning Mom.” I replied. I grabbed a plate and grabbed some sausages and pancakes. Mom sighed.
“I wish you liked eggs.” she commented.  I ignored her and quickly ate my pancakes and sausages. “Why are you in such a rush?” Mom asked.
“I have a nature project due for school and I need to take some pictures in the woods.” I answered. “Oh before I forget Morgan called last night. She asked if you wanted to come over today. I told her that you be there about noon.” Mom said. Morgan is my best friend. “Okay, I’ll just bike over there after I finish taking pictures.” I said. I got up from the table and ran out the door.
The woods were cool and shady, unlike the hot weather I had faced biking over here. I snapped a few pictures and then I took the key and ball out of my pocket. I placed the key in the keyhole and twisted it. A wind swirled around me and it stopped in about 3 seconds. I found myself in the in The Land of the Unicorns! I searched the lush green fields for Wish. I couldn’t spot the white unicorn mare with the rainbow mane and tail with her the sparkling silver horn. I noticed a girl about my age with short black hair was standing nearby laughing with a black unicorn colt and a pinkish purple unicorn mare. I walked up to her.
“Hello, I’m Sandra.” I introduced. The girl looked at me.
“I’m Imogen. You must be the girl that was chosen to help save this land.” Imogen said. I blushed. The mare snorted. “I’m Rosie and this is my colt Brazil.” The mare said softly. “Hi! Have you guys seen Wish around?” I asked. Imogen looked puzzled but Rosie nodded. “Wish went to the grocery store. I’ll take you there.” I climbed onto Rosie’s back.
“Can I come?” Imogen asked. “Sure.” Rosie replied. Imogen climbed on behind me and Rosie took off. Brazil flew next to us, his black mane flying. Rosie landed and I got off. Wish was walking out of the store. “Wish!” I called. Wish saw me. I walked up to Wish.
“Hi Sandra.” Wish said. She looked at Rosie and nickered. “How is Jewel doing?” Wish asked the mare. “She’s getting better every day.” replied Rosie. The mares were soon deep in conversation. I turned to Imogen.
“How did you find out about this place?” I asked.
“Well, I was reading this unicorn book and suddenly a wind blew around me. Rosie came up to me and told me to climb on. Rosie took me here and I’ve known about this land ever since. What about you?” Imogen said. I told her the story of how I got here. “How old are you?” I asked after I told the story. “11.” Imogen answered. “Me too!” I cried. Suddenly a siren started blaring. Wish and Rosie reared and looked at us. “Sandra, Imogen, hop on my back, quickly!” Wish cried. Me and Imogen hopped onto Wish. Wish took off flying faster than ever before. I shut my eyes, and waited for it to be over.
When Wish landed the siren was wailing louder than before. I opened my eyes and saw that we were at the Royal Stable. Queen Shimmer and King Shadow were outside looking worried.
“Get in the stable.” Queen Shimmer ordered. Wish catered into the Royal Stable. I saw all the maids in the Royal Stable’s aisle, each one looked scared.
“Wish what is going on?” I asked my voice shaky. I glanced out a window and gasped. All the unicorns were running or flying into a steel building. Wish sighed.
“Once the unicorns and pegasus’s were very close. A kind girl named Tina ruled the Land of the Pegasus’s. Then, Tina’s daughter came along. Since Tina was such a kind leader for that land, they gave the kingdom to Tina’s daughter, Tara. Turns out Tara was nothing like her mother. She was mean and very evil. But Tara had already become ruler of The Land of the Pegasus’s. The pegasus’s were forced to work in the street and they all were Tara’s slaves. Soon, Tara came here and demanded the king to give her this land. The king refused and Tara was furious. Ever since, Tara used the pegasus powers to try to destroy The Land of the Unicorns. The siren means she is getting ready to attack.” explained Wish.
A bright orange stallion with a red mane, tail, and horn walked up to us. “I have been given instructions to help you fight the evil one. A girl named Imogen is supposed to ride me.” said the stallion. “That’s me. But who are you?” Imogen asked.
“I am Blazing Fire. But call me Blaze.” the stallion answered.
Wish snorted. “Come on let’s get going. Sandra, climb on me.” Wish said. I mounted Wish and looked at Imogen. She tried to mount Blaze but the stallion was to tall. “Hurry up!” urged Wish. Blaze bowed and let Imogen climb onto his back. As soon as Blaze had completely stood up, Wish took off. We tore through the air, the wind stinging our faces. Wish slowed to a halt. There I saw her. With an evil grin on her face, a girl with mud brown hair in a tight braid was making a Pegasus shoot fire out of its wings. The fire burned down a row of cloud houses. “Tara.” Wish whispered. The unicorn had an angry face. Imogen scowled next to me.
“Let’s go!”
Blaze cried over the wailing of siren and the screams of the unicorns below. Wish flew slowly towards the scene. Blaze zoomed ahead of us. Wish flew faster and soon, Wish and Blaze were flying side by side. And then, we stopped. Tara noticed us and turned her Pegasus around to face Wish, Blaze, Imogen, and me.
“We meet again Wish.” Tara jeered. Wish snorted. Tara turned to Blaze. “What are you doing here?” she asked meanly. “I’m here to stop you.” Blaze snapped. Tara’s dark brown eyes flashed angrily. She whispered something into the Pegasus’s ear. The Pegasus shook his head.
“DO IT!” screamed Tara. The Pegasus ears flicked back and smoke rose from the ground. The Pegasus flicked his ears forward and the smoke came rushing towards us. We all coughed and Wish raised her horn.
“Away with this!” she cried. White beams of light flew up into the sky. The smoke cleared away. But the fire below was getting higher and higher. Blaze looked down at the fire.
“Hold on tight Imogen, cause we’re going in.” Blaze said. The stallion flew towards the fire. Imogen screamed. Soon, you could no longer see the pair. I looked at Tara. She smiled at me. I leaned up to Wish’s ear. “Can you knock her out?” I asked Wish in a whisper. Wish nodded. “But you have to help me.” Wish replied. “What do you mean?” I asked franticly. Wish didn’t answer. I heard Wish mumble something and suddenly. Wish’s horn shot out. It made the Pegasus jump and Tara scowled at us. Wish flew up to her and I got ready. I didn’t know what to do so I did what come to my mind. I slapped Tara in the arm, and then I yelled at her Pegasus. The Pegasus spooked and flew away. “I’ll be back!” Tara called over her shoulder.
“Good job Sandra.” Wish said. The siren turned off. I noticed the fire was out. “Where’s Blaze and Imogen?” I asked. Wish looked around. “Over there!” she cried. Wish flew over to where the stallion and girl was and landed. I jumped off Wish and ran over to Imogen. “Are you okay?” I asked. Imogen nodded and brushed the soot off her pants. Then she looked up at me, her eyes sparkling.
“That was fun!” she cried. I laughed. “When you’re riding Blaze, you can breathe in a fire! And you can’t get burned either!” Imogen chattered. I laughed some more. “We need to get back to the Royal Stable.” Blaze interrupted. Wish nodded. “He’s right. Come on you two.” We climbed onto Wish and Blaze. Wish and Blaze was tired so we walked instead of flying to the Royal Stable. When we arrived, King Shadow was standing outside waiting for us. “Good job.” King Shadow said. I slid off of Wish, and looked at King Shadow. “Imogen, Sandra, go home and enjoy your day.” he said. We took out our balls and key and put the keys in the keyholes. Imogen and me twisted the keys and we were swept away from The Land of the Unicorns.
I looked around the woods. I saw my bike a backpack and walked over to them. I checked my watch. It said it was 11:45! I had been in The Land of the Unicorns for at least an hour if not, more! Then I remembered that time didn’t pass when I was in The Land of the Unicorns. I got on my bike and rode to Morgan’s house. When I arrived, Morgan ran out of the house.
“Sandra! Guess what? I got a new Breyer horse!” she squealed. “Cool!” I said. I followed Morgan into her house. Morgan’s mom smiled. “Hello Sandra.” she said. “Hi Mrs. Roberts!” I replied. Morgan and I ran up to Morgan’s room to play with her new Breyer horse. When we were finished, we went outside to ride Morgan’s pony, Star. “You can go first.” Morgan said. She handed me her riding helmet and I put it on. I mounted Star and rode around the pasture. I walked, trotted, cantered, and galloped but none of the gaits were even close to feeling the way it felt to fly across the sky on Wish. I wish I could tell Morgan about Wish and The Land of the Unicorns, But I knew it had to be kept a secret. I finished my ride and handed the helmet to Morgan. “Have fun!” I said. Morgan rode around for a little while then we both groomed Star. I checked my watch after Star was completely put away. It said it was 5:05.
“I have to go.” I said. “Okay. Bye!” said Morgan. “Bye!” I called as I walked out of the barn. I hopped on my bike and rode home.
“Alex will you do the dishes?” Mom asked my little brother. I put my plate in the sink and grabbed a cookie that Mom had made this afternoon.
“But it’s Sandra’s turn to do the dishes.” Alex protested. “But Sandra has to type up her nature paper.” Mom said firmly. I walked up to my room and turned on my laptop. I was almost typing my nature paper when my older sister, Lilly, interrupted. “Have you seen my favorite pair of flip-flops?” she asked. “No but did you check Alex’s room? He is always stealing our stuff.” I replied. “Thanks.” Lilly said as she ran out of my room. I finished my paper and got ready for bed. I couldn’t fall asleep though. I got up and looked out into the night sky. I searched for the wishing star but I couldn’t find it. Then I remembered something. Whenever something happened and Wish couldn’t run the wishing star, she made look like any old star! I quickly changed into jeans and a t-shirt and slipped on some sandals. I grabbed The ball and twisted the key. The wind blew towards me and I watched as a white cloud surrounded me.
I ran towards the Royal Stable. It was dark but luckily I had stuck a flashlight in my pocket before I left my house. I searched the land for any signs for danger but found none. That is until the siren went off. The siren wailed louder and louder by the minute. Unicorns sprinted out of their cloud houses. Most of them took off in the air but a few just galloped. But they were all going one place, the big steel building. I ran faster, searching the sky for Wish. Soon, I could see the huge golden stable.
“Sandra?!” cried a voice. I saw Imogen running towards me. “Imogen! I can’t find Wish!” I yelped. Unicorns were screeching as I noticed that the night sky was getting darker. I sniffed the air, afraid what I know I would smell. Smoke. “Imogen! We have to get out of here!” I screamed. We ran through the smoke, coughing up a storm. I saw the gate to the Royal Stable. Imogen saw too.
“We have to climb over it!” Imogen yelled over the roar of the flames. The flames seemed to be chasing us as we threw ourselves over the gate. We ran towards the Royal Stable, coughing harder ever second. Finally we got to the door. Imogen flung it open and we ran weakly inside.
“Are you okay?” asked a familiar voice. I opened my eyes and saw Stella looking at us. The kind women was Queen Shimmer’s favorite human, she lived her full time and was a very important part of this land. “Yeah.” I croaked. I was laying on a hay bale, with Imogen laying on one right next to me. I heard hooves coming our way. I looked up and saw Wish!
“Wish!” I cried.
I sat up and so did Imogen. Wish looked at us. Blaze flew up to us. “Wish I don’t know what to do! I flew through the fire and it was out of control.” Blaze said. Then he saw us. “Are they strong enough to help?” Blaze asked Stella. “They should be.” she answered. Blaze looked at Wish. Wish nodded. “Hop on our backs.” Wish ordered. Imogen climbed onto Blaze’s back and I climbed onto Wish’s back. “Let’s go Imogen!” cried Blaze. They took off heading towards the fire. Wish took up flying into the sky. Using her unicorn powers, we were surrounded by a bubble of oxygen. We searched the sky for Tara and her Pegasus but t was hard to see. I pulled out my flashlight but in was out of batteries. “Wish, we can’t see!” I said. Wish sighed. “Can you use your powers or something to help us see?” I asked. “No.” replied Wish. I groaned. Then I thought of an idea.
“Could you give me new batteries?” I asked. “I can do that. But why?” Wish said. “You’ll see.” I answered. Wish mumbled something and fresh batteries appeared in my hand. I took the old batteries out of my flashlight and replaced them with the new. I turned my flashlight on. It worked! “Good idea Sandra!” Wish cried. We spotted Tara in the darkness. “Let’s go.” I urged. Wish didn’t move. “I think we should just use wind to send her back to The Land of the Pegasus’s.” Wish said. “But she’ll just come right back!” I cried. “Well it’s too dangerous to approach.” Wish complained.
“Come on! I know what to do. Trust me Wish, just trust me!” I pleaded. Wish sighed. “I don’t know about this.” Wish said nervously. “JUST TRUST ME!” I screamed.
Wish flew forward. “Oh Tara!” I chanted. I felt Wish shake underneath me. Tara glanced at us. “Oh it’s you again. Isn’t this such a great fire?” she said sweetly. “Okay clear the smoke away right now.” I whispered. Wish did as I told her too. Tara whipped the pegasus around to face us. I saw out of the corner of my eye Blaze and Imogen zooming through the fire, Blaze squirting water at the flames. I took a deep breath. “Tara, you are not going to get this kingdom. So go home where you belong!” I yelled.
“Be quiet you little brat.” Tara snapped. “No.” I said. Tara told her pegasus to do something. Soon I was struggling for air. Tara had popped our oxygen bubble! Wish formed a new one and shot a ray of light at Tara.
“My eyes!” Tara screeched. She looked at us. “You jerks!” she jeered. Tara whispered something into her pegasus’s ear. Suddenly the pegasus’s wings were on fire. “Prepare to feel my fire!” screamed Tara. “Freeze.” I said. The pegasus stopped. “Don’t hurt me or Wish. You need to stop being so evil!” I cried. I saw Blaze rise up into the sky. “I won’t let you hurt us.” I added. “Who cares! My fire is very hot and you can’t stop it!” Tara cried meanly. “But I can.” Blaze said suddenly. Tara gasped. Blaze shot water out of his horn, causing the fire on the pegasus’s wings to go out. At the same time, Wish blew Tara back to The Land of the Pegasus’s.
When arrived at the Royal Stable, there was a celebration. Queen Shimmer called me and Imogen heroes. King Shadow taught Wish and Blaze more spells. And we were all, proud of what we had done. I had learned two life lessons, that you have to trust each other, and that words can be more powerful then actions.
