Midnight Sky

Chapter One

The newborn foal was solid black, with only a white star in his forehead.
"He is beautiful," Falling Ashes, a sooty gray mare said. "Black as midnight."
"Then I will call him Midnight Sky," Rising Dawn said. The horses watched as the weak foal tried to stand up. His legs wobbled, and he fell down. Midnight tried again. He stood up on his shaky legs, and lost his balance, but quickly regained it, and stood up straight. He took one wobbly step... then another one... and another one, until he was by his mother's side.
Rising Dawn looked down at him. "Midnight," She said softly. "Welcome to the herd."
That was Midnight's first day in the herd. By an hour, he could run by his mother's side, and play with the rest of the foals.
"Go on and play with the rest of the foals," Dawn told Midnight, as the horses stopped to graze.
Midnight galloped to the other foals, where he found Singing Lark among them. Lark was about Midnight's age, having been born only one day before him. The two foals had become great friends.
"Hi, Lark," Midnight said, walking up to Lark. "What are you doing?"
"Just doing races with the rest of the foals," He said. "Would you like to play?"
Midnight nodded, eager to begin.
They all lined up by a bush, and Diving Hawk shouted, "Go!"
All the foals started running, kicking up dirt, and Swimming Fog zoomed to the lead. The race was quick, and Midnight Sky won third place, among the older foals.
"That was amazing!" Lark told him, as they grazed the grasses together.
